Fluoridation in Ohio |
According to the Ohio Department of Health, approximately 91% of the 10.5 million Ohio residents served by public water supplies are getting their water from fluoridated systems. Nationally, Ohio ranks 17th in the percentage of people on public water systems receiving fluoridated water. In 1969, the Ohio General Assembly passed a law requiring fluoridation of all public water supplies that serve more than 5,000 residents. The law provided customers of the affected water systems the opportunity to be exempted through a referendum held within 240 days of the law's passage. Thirty Ohio communities held special referenda in 1970 and were exempted from the law. Since then, seven of those communities have reversed the decision. Athens, Bellefontaine, Bellevue, Fairborn, Middletown, Delaware and Tipp City are now fluoridated. However, 23 communities (more than 942,000 Ohio residents) continue to remain exempt from the law and do not receive fluoridated water. Ohio communities that remain fluoride-free are: |
